A great introduction to Santa Fe

A few of our favorites

Explore the Art

Both organically and deliberately, art has played a critical role in Santa Fe’s history, and continues to thrive today. The city ranks in the Top 3 Art Markets in the US with over 250 galleries. Additionally, museums abound, and the Institute of American Indian Arts calls Santa Fe home. We certainly have our favorite galleries (either to purchase or to merely admire). Art, however, is so personal, both in creation and consumption, that we hesitate to pick a few…but encourage all to explore. Instead, we recommend you wander up Canyon Road. The 100 galleries run the gamut (historical to modern, high to low), so something for everyone. The setting itself is historic, and very Santa Fe.

Escape Town

Engage with the History

This place we now call Santa Fe is still recognized as Oga Po’geh. This is the land of the Tewa, who have called this home for over a millennium. Santa Fe itself came to be in 1610. It is the site of the only successful Native revolt . . . and the home of O’Keefe and Oppenheimer. With such a long and rich history, a guided tour is a great way to get grounded in this amazing place. Ana Pacheco, whose family arrived in 1692, gives fantastic walking tours!

Eat the Chile!

Greet the day with a horseback ride along a scenic ridge in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains; discover beautiful wooded hiking trails in the Santa Fe National Forest, accessed straight from the property; embark on a pueblo tour to learn about the fascinating history and culture of the surrounding area. Discover a variety of unique curated Santa Fe excursions and experiences.

Northern New Mexico is stunning in its natural beauty (just ask all the artists that painted it). It’s easy never to leave town, but to really appreciate New Mexico, it’s best to get out to the land. Bandalier and Abiqui are well worth the trip, but we frequently find ourselves on the road to Chimayo. The easy 25 minute drive from Santa Fe with views that truly inspire takes you to Santuario de Chimayo, a truly quintessential New Mexico church that also is very sacred within the Catholic Church. Known for its healing dirt, pilgrims make the walk from Santa Fe every Good Friday. We typically cap off a Chimayo trip with margaritas at Tesuque Village Market (on the way back to Bishop’s Lodge).

Santa Fe embraces food of all kinds. Restaurants rival galleries in number and James Beard chefs and establishments are plentiful. Nonetheless, the chile rules. The state question of New Mexico, which is asked at all meals, is “Red, Green, or Christmas??" The state fragrance is roasting green chile. Chiles are on our license plates. So, eat the Chile! It comes in everything…try everything. Bread, caramel, apple pie, quiche, you name it. Better yet, learn how to work the chile yourself. The Santa Fe Cooking School, right in town, offers some great classes and the instructors make it fun! Ask for Mikah
